American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta and stars Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, and Taylor Kitsch. The plot of the movie is after the death of his girlfriend at the hands of Islamic terrorists, Mitch Rapp is drawn into the world of counter-terrorism, mentored by a former U.S. Navy SEAL Stan Hurley. I knew nothing going into this movie and it was disappointing for the most part. I did enjoy parts of the movie. The film starts out with an action scene on the beach it is a very well done scene and one of the best action scenes of the year. For the first thirty minutes, I was enjoying the movie a lot because you get to see this guy go from a horrible situation and build himself into an extremely powerful person so he can infiltrate terrorist groups to kill them and for a while, that was fun to watch. Then the movie started to take itself way too seriously, but what kept me wanting to watch were the two lead performances from Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton they were both fantastic and their characters were interesting. I don’t think this movie should have been completely silly and over-the-top like Fast and the Furious it’s definitely a serious-minded film, but it does feel like there is no fun to be had with this movie because of how serious it is. The two leads O’Brien and Keaton try the best they can to keep this movie entertaining, but the other actors I thought were awful especially Taylor Kitsch he plays Ghost the villain of the film. He was not intimating at all and I didn’t think he was that interesting a villain. The action scenes are good Dylan O’Brien does a lot of it himself and I was impressed with his work. 2 out of 5 stars for American Assassin. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helped you decide whether to see the movie or not.
