Battle of the sexes is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. It stars Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan cumming, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell, and Eric Christian Olsen. This is the true story of the 1973 tennis match between world number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs. I knew nothing about this story going into it and I came out feeling like it was an OK movie nothing special. Easily the best part of this movie is the performances from Emma Stone and Steve Carell. Emma Stone is fantastic in the movie I fell like she could get another OSCAR nomination for this. I did not see the Emma Stone that we have come to know I saw Billie Jean King. Same thing with Steve Carell he looked exactly like Bobby Riggs. Another great thing the movie explores with Billie Jean King is her dealing with her sexuality and how she has to keep that secret. At the beginning of the movie, she is happily married, but she meets a woman named Marilyn and the form a relationship. The tennis match at the end was very exciting. If you are going into this movie expecting the battle of the sexes it is in this movie, but I feel that is more the second half of the movie. The first half is Emma Stone’s exploration of her sexuality and dealing with her personal life and it did feel like the first half dragged a lot. Another problem I had was Sarah Silverman I find her annoying in anything she is in and this is no different. I’m glad I saw the movie. It’s an impotent movie to see, but it’s nothing I’m going re-watch. I’ll remember this event. Maybe the movie will grab other people more than me I saw this with two people who were around when this event happened and they both enjoyed the movie more than I did. 3 out of 5 stars for Battle of the Sexes. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helped you decide whether to see the movie or not.
