Coco is directed by Lee Unkrish and stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Renee Victor, Alanna Ubach, Jamie Camil, Sofia Espinosa, Selene Luna, Alfonso Arau, and Edward James Olmos. The plot of the movie is aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to work out the mystery. Going into the movie I really didn’t know much about it. This movie is wonderful. The entire cast commits to their roles. No voice feels out of place. No one feels like they are lazily going through the script. Pixar once again knows how to make these beautifully realized worlds. The animation is absolutely stunning. The CGI rendering is incredible. There is one scene where a character is swimming in water and the water looked so real I thought I was watching a live action film. It’s amazing every movie Pixar puts out the animation looks better than the previous movie. I love the story of this movie you do get a little of it in the trailer, but there is so much more to it. The story is very engaging it keeps you guessing. Pixar goes to a dark place when the big twist is revealed and I am glad they weren’t afraid to go there. It helps create a more mature story that both kids and adults can enjoy. The characters are all well written. I think the movie has a lot of great humor. Almost all the jokes work some fall flat, but thankfully not a lot. I do have one negative and that is the scenes when Miguel was in the Land of the Living were not as engaging as the scenes in The Land of the Dead. If you do go and see this movie be aware that there is a 20 minute Frozen short before it. I like Frozen, but this thing fucking sucked. So you can take your time going into the theater. I heard a kid with five minutes to go in the short ask if it was over yet that’s not a good sign. The short should have just aired on Disney Channel. 4 out of 5 stars for Coco. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helped you decide whether to see the movie or not.
