Annihilation is directed by Alex Garland and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. The plot of the movie is a biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply. I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. I understood what Alex Garland was trying to do with this movie, but I don’t think it was conveyed very well. The movie focused so much on the visuals and imagery which are fantastic. Because it focused so much on that I felt that it was really lacking in its plot and character development. We don’t learn much about anyone. We have 5 intelligent scientists trying to basically save the world and the fact that I didn’t give a shit about any of them was disappointing. The characters start getting picked off one by one and the viewer does not care because we don’t know anything about them. We don’t ever really understand their motivations for why they would go on this suicide mission. The plot I had an issue with because this movie is told out of order. Usually, I would be into that unique storytelling narrative. I don’t think it works for this movie because there are certain details that you need to know or understand to understand different parts of the film. Something that happened at the end they show in the beginning. Something that happens in the middle they show at the end. Lots of events are shown to you out of order and it makes it hard to piece the story together. The cast in this movie is great I am a fan of Natalie Portman, but she is not used well in this movie at all. I found out after the movie ended that it is based on a book. So this might be one of those situations where reading the book would help you understand the film, but movies should be able to stand on there own 1 out of 5 stars for Annihilation. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helped you decide whether to see the movie or not.
